Exquisite dreamer, stephen foster, americas first folk song author - poetry

"Beautiful Dreamer" was printed by Stephen Advance just ahead of his death in 1864 at age 37. The song became one of his most famed and most popular. However, as with the approximately 200 other songs that Advance wrote for the duration of his brief lifetime, he did not accept the appreciation or fiscal reward that he deserved.

Stephen Care for was America's first great songwriter, yet he died with 38 cents in a leather poke and a scrap of paper on which he had in black and white a bit of song lyric, "dear associates and gentle hearts. "

Stephen Collins Foster was born near Pittsburgh on July 4, 1826, the same day that both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died. Cultivate died in 1864 when he suffered a fall at home while weak from fever. The fall cut open his head and he died in New York's Bellevue Hospice briskly thereafter. Cultivate had been agony from alcoholism for years prior to his fortuitous death.

Young Stephen was able to play tunes on the guitar at age two, and at age ten he performed accepted comic songs with local boys. By age 18 he wrote blackface minstrel songs which were the all the rage folk music of the day. At age 21 he collected the minstrel song, "Oh! Susanna," which became a hit, resung, repeated, and whistled athwart the country. In fact it became the unofficial song of praise of the California Gold Rush two years later.

Music magazine was in its infancy in those days and music copy didn't even exist. Stephen Bring up did not collect royalties or fees for the many publications or measures of "Oh! Susanna" over the next few years. Indeed, he gave away the human rights to the song and never customary a penny for it.

Over the next ten years Care for wrote many songs, counting "The Swanee River (Old Folks at Home)," "Camptown Races," "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair," "Old Black Joe," "Nelly Bly," "Old Dog Tray," and "My Old Kentucky Home. " Stephen Advance earned a barely money by promotion his songs outright, some for as a small amount as one dollar. It's been said that his songwriting earned him about $20,000 all through the 15 or so years of his songwriting career.

In 1935 Florida adopted "The Swanee River" as the allowed state song, despite the fact that Stephen Advance never visited Florida nor saw the river. He chose "Swanee" since the two syllables fit the music he had written. Bring up sold E. P. Christy of the "Christy Minstrels," a blackface minstrel show troupe, the authorship constitutional rights to "The Swanee River," a disappointing decision.

The song became a accepted intercontinental folk tune and has been attributed with initial the tourist commerce in Florida. Commencement in the 1880's millions of ancestors traveled to Florida to view the famed northern Florida river.

In 1928 Kentucky adopted "My Old Kentucky Home" as their authoritative state song. In 1986 Kentucky altered the back line of the song, "'Tis summer, the darkies are gay;" to "'Tis summer, the ancestors are gay;" for apparent reasons.

Because of the popularity of "My Old Kentucky Home" and "The Swanee River," many colonize have the consciousness that Stephen Care for was a southern gentleman. However, he visited the South on only one occasion, a steamboat trip to New Orleans in 1852.

Stephen Cultivate spent his life by and large in Pennsylvania and New York. His father, William Advance Sr. , spent many years in politics, functioning for Leader Harrison and appealing determination to two terms as mayor of Allegheny, Pa.

Prior to the Civil War Stephen Bring up helped James Buchanan be converted into Leader by appropriate the musical chief of the Buchanan Glee Club and by inscription musical pieces for the battle effort.

During the Civil War Stephen Advance wrote about 70 songs, commonly jingoistic war songs which sold poorly. For the duration of the war Foster's alcoholism deteriorated his shape until his poverty-stricken death in 1864.

Two months after his death, Stephen Foster's "Beautiful Dreamer" was available in New York.

Beautiful Dreamer by Stephen Foster

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are behind you for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away!

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng, --
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea
Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet clouds are borne,
Waiting to fade at the brainy advent morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of be distressed depart, --
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
